Let's talk about the dry eye?

Ocular dehydration, commonly called dry eye, results from inadequate tear production, which can cause symptoms of irritation and eye discomfort and can also make vision a little blurred. It is often the cause of a certain discomfort that we feel more at the end of the day, such as a feeling of heavy eyes and the constant need to rub them.

The causes of dry eye are many and include, among others, spending too much time in a dry environment, contact lens wear, certain autoimmune diseases (e.g. Sjögren's, rheumatoid arthritis), eyelid disorders (such as blepharitis ), some medications, hormonal changes, aging and the use of digital screens.

This last cause has been the most common nowadays due to the constant use of screens, the set of symptoms being classified as Computer Visual Syndrome (CVS).

Computer Visual Syndrome, also known as Digital Eyestrain, describes a set of problems related to the eyes and vision that result from prolonged use of the computer, tablet, e-reader and smartphones. When we look at a computer or other digital screen, we blink less frequently, which results in greater tear film evaporation.

According to the American Optometric Association, to help alleviate digital eyestrain, you should follow the 20-20-20 rule: pause for 20 seconds to view something 6 meters away (20 feet) every 20 minutes!

What are the symptoms of dry eye?

  • Eye redness;
  • Excessive tear production, constant tearing;
  • blurred vision;
  • Eye irritation and discomfort.

What is the treatment for dry eye?

  • Use of artificial tears (moisturizing eye drops);
  • Greater eyelid hygiene;
  • Avoid environments with air conditioning;
  • Changing habits and viewing time on digital screens;
  • Use of ophthalmic lenses with anti-reflective treatment against harmful blue light.

Moisturizing eye drops, also known as comfort tears, are the most efficient means of relieving dry eye symptoms by increasing tear volume. When indicated, proper treatment of eyelid conditions such as blepharitis can be effective in reducing dry eye symptoms.

In summary, if you regularly apply artificial tears, if you follow the eye hygiene advice and if you change your screen viewing habits, you will contribute to your eyes being healthier and hydrated!!!
